He shared the 1978 Nobel Prize in physics for helping find evidence of the Big Bang Theory on the origin of the universe. His co-laureates were his colleague Robert W. Wilson, and Peter Kapitza who was recognized for his work in cryogenics. During his freshman year at City College of New York, he switched his major to physics because he was bored by chemistry. After graduation, he spent two years working on radar in the Army Signal Corps, before receiving a master's degree and a doctorate in physics, both at Columbia University.
