Tom Flanigan (Thomas Howard Flanigan) was born in Hibernia, New Jersey in 1972. His family moved to Stevensville, Montana in 1979. After high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served throughout the Pacific on active duty from 1990-1994, and was deployed to Mogadishu, Somalia in 1992-1993, during Operation Restore Hope. He holds 3 degrees in anthropology with an archaeological emphasis. A Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Montana (1999), a Master of Arts degree from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks (2002), and he earned a PhD from the University of Utah (2019). He has worked on archaeological projects in Alaska, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, and at the site of Hierakonpolis, Egypt in 2004/2007. He is married to Simone Flanigan, who is an English Professor at Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City, Utah. They have 3 children Emma, Tommy, and Freya. He works for the U.S. Forest Service as the Forest Archaeologist for the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. He is an Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at the University of Utah, and an Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at Salt Lake Community College.
